Art Direction Exercise

Creative Brief Response

This is an independent creative exercise developed in response to a design brief. This project was not commissioned, produced, or approved by the brand.

Overview: Michelob Ultra Seltzer presented an interesting challenge: How do you make a hard seltzer relevant to a generation that no longer needs alcohol to have a good time? The brief challenged to create a single master graphic capable of connecting with Gen Z while positioning the brand as a natural part of their culture rather than the center of attention.

The
Challenge

Gen Z is redefining its relationship with alcohol. Experiences, friendships, and shared moments often matter more than the products consumed during them. The challenge was not to create another beverage advertisement, but to build a visual narrative where the product could belong to the moment without becoming its protagonist.

Insight: The drink is the excuse. The moment is the event. For many young adults today, gathering with friends is the primary motivation. The activity may change, but the reason remains the same: spending time together.

Creative Platform:
"El Plan era vernos"

Instead of focusing on nightlife or traditional party culture, the concept celebrates intentional moments of connection. Board games, creative workshops, movie nights, listening sessions, reading clubs, drawing meetups, rooftop gatherings, or simply spending time together.
The product accompanies the experience, but never defines it.

Art Direction:
The visual system was designed around four principles:

01 — Shared Experiences

Real-life moments become the hero of the story.

The selected scenario features a group of friends gathered for a game night, representing a broader cultural shift toward more intentional and intimate social experiences.

02 — Documentary Photography

Inspired by early-2000s digital photography.

Flash-lit, candid, imperfect, and emotionally authentic moments create a sense of participation rather than observation.

03 — Observational Copy

A simple line anchors the entire concept:

EL PLAN ERA VERNOS

The copy reframes the image by shifting attention away from the activity itself and toward the people involved.

04 — Iconic Ingredients

Fruit-inspired 3D elements were reinterpreted as collectible visual objects rather than traditional product ingredients.

These assets create a flexible visual language capable of extending across multiple formats, flavors, and experiences while reinforcing the premium nature of the brand.

System Thinking

The master graphic was conceived as the starting point of a scalable visual platform.

While activities may change, the creative framework remains consistent:

  • Shared experiences as the hero
  • Product as a companion
  • Observational copy
  • Documentary-style photography
  • Flavor-inspired visual assets

Potential extensions include:

  • Drink & Draw sessions
  • Ceramics workshops
  • Reading clubs
  • Music listening sessions
  • Gaming nights
  • Rooftop gatherings
  • Beach meetups

Outcome

This exercise explored how a beverage brand can become culturally relevant by participating in meaningful experiences rather than attempting to dominate them.

The resulting visual system balances premium positioning with cultural authenticity, creating a flexible framework that can adapt to different moments while maintaining a consistent brand narrative.
